anCOURSE DESCRIPTION:
9th Grade Literature is a 1 credit course which combines the traditional survey of classic and contemporary fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama with an innovative, multidisciplinary approach to writing. Students will develop proficiency in all four strands of the Common Core standards for Language Arts while developing 21st century leadership and technology skills. English language learners will receive the necessary accommodations and modifications to access this complex material in a flexible, scaffold, smaller-group setting. Spring Semester 2020 January 6-10: Students will start short story unit. "Coming of Age" is one theme that will be discussed. This week we will read an excerpt from the novel Speak and the short story "Marigolds" in class and discuss literary terms such as voice, tone, diction, syntax, theme, and the importance of dashes in writing. Students will write "Marigolds" using a different person's point of view. Vocabulary words will be introduced. We will also discuss the elements of a short story. On Friday, students will take a pre-summative test. January 13-17: This week we will read "Always Running" (prose) and "Race Politics" (poetry) by Louis Rodriguez. We will analyze the story and answer text-dependent questions. Students will create their "Coming of Age " poems which is due on Friday. Students will take the Unit 1 post-test on Friday. January 20-24: Unit 2: Coming of Age on Stage: We will read, analyze, and discuss sonnets. We will pay attention to William Shakespeare's Sonnets 18 & 147. Students are assigned a coming of age narrative. We will also begin Romeo and Juliet this unit. January 27-31: Students will work on their coming of age narratives on Monday and Tuesday. ACCESS TESTING (January 29-February 5). February 3-28: Begin reading Romeo and Juliet, study guide questions, activities (Scavenger hunt and Who's to Blame), discussion, etc. Students will also have journal topics to write for each Act in Romeo and Juliet. We will have a CTLS summative on Romeo and Juliet and a constructed response on February 26. March 2-6: We will begin Unit 3: Defining Style. As a class, we will read poems Fire and Ice by Robert Frost and A Poison Tree by William Blake. We will discuss text-dependent questions for each poem. Students will illustrate an image of the poem A Poison Tree. Literary terms to know are style, imagery, symbol, figurative and literal language, first person point of view, third person limited and omniscient. We will also read The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry and answer text-dependent questions and recognize irony and symbolism. From this story, students will also write with the vocabulary words. March 9-13: We will read The Cask of Amontillado and then students will answer text-dependent questions as a story analysis (Springboard books p. 131-137). We will review vocabulary words for The Gift of the Magi and The Cask of Amontillado (vocabulary analysis test on Friday the 13th). Students will do a constructed response on Thursday. Students will also write an alternate ending to The Cask of Amontillado starting on Wednesday (Early Release Day). Students need to study their vocabulary words each day to prepare for Friday's test. March 16-20: We will be out of school indefinitely. In the meantime, learning will take place. I will be available virtually 10:30 am - 12:00 pm daily and for office hours from 1:00-2:00 pm. After you have finished with the reading assignments, you have a persuasive writing assignment (Unit 4: Finding Your Voice). You are to convince me in your writing about a certain topic. You have two choices for your topic: "Can Money Buy Happiness" or "Is Social Media Helpful or Harmful." You can type the essay using your Microsoft 365 Account.
